12 years of Community Support to Cover Morden Teen’s Medical Costs

12 years of Community Support to Cover Morden Teen’s Medical Costs

For over a decade, Manitoba’s Morden community has been supporting teenager Evan Hesom on his journey through numerous surgeries and challenges.

Born with spina bifida, Evan has undergone more than 30 surgeries in his life, including a major reconstructive procedure on both feet earlier this year. The annual community fundraiser helps his family cover high medical costs and reminds Evan that he’s not alone as his community stands behind him every step of the way.

Evan’s latest surgery was to straighten his toes. His mom, Connie, said the procedure was done to help Evan balance better, walk longer, and hopefully use his wheelchair less. For over a decade, the Hesom family has held an annual fundraiser to help cover medical expenses not covered by Manitoba Health.

The 12th Annual Evan Hesom Fundraiser was held on Saturday, Nov. 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Mulligan’s in Winkler. Guests enjoyed burgers, chicken fingers, and fries, with brownies and ice cream for dessert. The evening also featured a 50/50 draw and a silent auction. For Evan, the event is about more than just raising money, while Connie says the generosity of the community has been overwhelming.
