Harvest Algoma, a vital food resource centre in Sault Ste. Marie, has played a crucial role in addressing food insecurity and supporting individuals in need of food. Equipped with a warehouse, large kitchen, and greenhouses, Harvest Algoma supports over 70 local non-profit agencies, including Algoma Family Services, St. Vincent Place, Indigenous Friendship Centre, Child Care Algoma, and the Salvation Army. Its reach extends to organizations like Bruce Mines Food Bank and Thessalon Food Bank, highlighting its significant impact across the region.
The Harvest Algoma program was started in 2017 by United Way Sault Ste. Marie & Algoma District to help reduce food insecurity in the city. The organization’s contributions were recently acknowledged with the Community Builders Award in the Environment category, recognizing the significant positive impact the food centre has made on the local environment and community.
Harvest Algoma has been committed to ensuring that nutritious food reaches those in need in the community and surrounding areas. It has also worked on reducing waste and strengthening local food systems. The organization’s efforts have since created a ripple effect, benefiting both individuals and families throughout the community.
In 2023, the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre’s Rural Agri-Innovation Network (RAIN) division took over operations of Harvest Algoma, with plans to transform the charity into a self-sustaining social enterprise over the next three years. This new approach aims to enhance its capacity to serve the community while promoting sustainability.
Meals By Harvest, the newly launched social enterprise, has provided the public with opportunities to contribute by visiting its storefront at 446 Second Line E. Customers could purchase oven-ready frozen meals, baked goods, and more, with options for individual and family-sized portions, as well as online ordering.
By purchasing meals, community members support Harvest Algoma’s mission to provide food assistance and strengthen local connections. The positive feedback from the community reflects a growing recognition of the importance of such initiatives in fostering resilience and unity within the community.
At Polite Canada, we believe in the power of community and the importance of coming together to support one another. Recognizing initiatives like Harvest Algoma highlights the collective effort and difference individuals and organizations can have in their communities. These stories of collaboration and compassion inspire us all to contribute to our communities and uplift those in need.
