Food Banks of Quebec serving 870,000 each month

In Quebec, more than 870,000 people need food assistance every month. Since 1988, the non-profit organization, Food Banks of Quebec, has played a key role in feeding people across Quebec. The Food bank is at the head of a formidable provincial network. With 32 independent regional members, Food Banks of Quebec serves nearly 1,300 affiliated local community organizations, which respond to 2.6 million requests for food assistance each month.

Some of its programs include:

The milk donation program, made possible through the mobilization of Quebec Milk Producers, was launched in 2003 and has continued to grow and strengthen over the past 20 years. As of 2023, the program celebrated its 20th anniversary, having successfully donated over 13 million litres of milk since its inception.

Since 2018, the Food Banks of Quebec have begun a major funding campaign to ensure the deployment and operation of the Supermarket Recovery Program (PRS) throughout Quebec. The funds raised will be used to purchase equipment such as refrigerated trucks, collection bins, and cold rooms, as well as to support logistics, transportation, and storage. Over 130 companies and organizations have joined this tremendous effort, making total commitments of $11.4 million over five years.

Since 2014, the mission of PLTQ has been to encourage their pea, bean, and sweet corn producers to generously donate a portion of their harvest to the Food Banks of Quebec to feed those in need. In the 2023 season, these producers donated a total of 793,177 servings of vegetables to the Food Banks of Quebec. Thanks to Nortera, who has committed to doubling donations, a total of 1,586,354 portions of processed vegetables were given to the Food Bank.

Generous Hunters is a game meat donation program intended for people in need in the majority of regions of Quebec, made possible thanks to the harvests and generosity of hunters and the involvement of butchers. This program is the result of our collaboration with the Quebec Federation of Hunters and Fishermen. The year 2022 ended with a total of 7,850 pounds of game meat donated by Quebec hunters. Surpassing the record of 7,500 books, the 2022 edition was a great success offering nearly 49,055 portions of meat to families in need.

According to the 2023 HungerCount report, in March 2023, there were 682,724 registered visits in Quebec. Among these visits, 240,325 were for children. There was a 38.0% change in total visits from 2022 to 2023 and a significant 97.8% change from 2019 to 2023. Notably, 1286 food banks reported providing a cumulative total of 1,910,953 meals and snacks during this period.
