Canadian Olympians were warmly welcomed by their families and fans at Pearson Airport as they returned from the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. The games took place from July 26 to August 11, 2024. Since 1900, Canada has participated in every Summer Olympic Games, except for the 1980 Moscow Olympics. The Canadian team consisted of 315 athletes, including 123 men and 192 women from nine provinces and territories. Sprinter Andre De Grasse and weightlifter Maude Charron were the flag bearers for the opening ceremony, and hammer thrower Ethan Katzberg and swimmer Summer McIntosh were the flag bearers for the closing ceremony.
Canadian athletes had the best performance at the Olympics in Canadian Olympic history, winning a total of 27 medals (nine gold, seven silver, and 11 bronze). This achievement placed Canada 12th in the medal table and 11th in overall medals won out of 84 participating countries.
Swimming raked in eight medals and track and field’s five medals accounted for almost half of Canada’s medal tally in Paris. Summer McIntosh won three gold medals and four medals in total in the pool. Ethan Katzberg won gold in the hammer throw, a first for him, and his teammate Camryn Rogers won the women’s event two days later, completing a sweep at Stade de France.
Canada won its first Olympic gold medal in men’s breaking on Saturday at Place de la Concorde. The men’s 4×100 relay team, consisting of Aaron Brown, Jerome Blake, Brendon Rodney, and anchorman Andre De Grasse, achieved an unexpected victory at the track after De Grasse had hinted that his hamstring was not completely healthy.
Canadians won medals in 15 sports, matching the record set at the 1984 Summer Olympics. The 27 medals were the most ever for Canada, surpassing the 24 won in 2020, and the nine gold medals were also a new high (excluding the 1984 Games). The United States is looking to host a strong Olympics in 2028 after finishing first in the medal table in Paris with 126 medals, including 40 gold.
