Alanis Morissette to Receive Icon Award at Billboard Canada Women in Music 2024

One of Canada’s most successful artists, Alanis Morissette, will receive the Icon Award at the inaugural Billboard Canada Women in Music event on September 7, 2024, in Toronto. The Icon Award is presented to a female artist who has achieved extraordinary success and made historic contributions to the industry and artistry. Previous recipients of this prestigious award include Kylie Minogue, Jennifer Lopez, Shania Twain, and Alanis Morissette herself, who first received the honour in 2019.

Billboard Canada is hosting the Women in Music event in Canada to honour influential and pioneering women in the music industry. The event will be held from 4:00-7:00 PM at 473 Adelaide St W, Toronto, Ontario.

An iconic musician appealing to multiple generations, Alanis Morissette is an excellent choice for the Icon Award in the first expansion of Billboard Women in Music to Canada. Her 1995 album, Jagged Little Pill, was a tremendous success, offering a mix of vulnerability, confrontation, humour, and poetry.

After the release of that album, which has now also become a hit Broadway musical, she became the first artist to sell over 2 million copies in Canada. Since then, she hasn’t slowed down, launching her 10 studio albums and three live albums collectively selling more than 75 million copies worldwide. In addition to her success in music, Morissette is also a well-known speaker, activist, and advocate for wholeness.

Morissette was often categorized as an angry songwriter in the ’90s but is now widely celebrated as a multi-dimensional artist who has demonstrated the diverse representation of femininity in music. This has opened doors for multiple generations of musicians who continue to be inspired by her work.

Talking at the Billboard Women in Music 2019 event, Morissette joked, “I was loved, ignored, adored, and hated, [and] that it’s hard for a polite Canadian to accept such an honour. Then I was considered really hip and then totally irrelevant and then totally relevant again… These roles and archetypes are within all of us, all the women in the room, and all the women I’ve worked with.”

Alanis Morissette will be honoured at Billboard Canada Women in Music 2024 along with other influential members of the music industry. More honorees for Billboard Canada Women in Music will be announced soon, joining Alanis, The Beaches, LU KALA, and Allison Russell.
