The Age-Friendly Communities Grant program is open for applications from September 17 to November 1 each year. This program offers funding to support community projects that create environments friendly to seniors, promote healthy aging, and have a positive impact on the lives of older adults in Nova Scotia. Last year, over $530,000 was awarded to fund 44 community projects across the province.
One of the recipients, the BOLD Living Learning Centre in Baddeck, used its Age-Friendly Communities Grant to offer wellness and social activities for seniors. The centre also organized opportunities for seniors and youth to come together for activities like crafts and games. Community groups can apply for funding to launch new projects that help seniors stay active and involved in their communities.
Eligible organizations can receive up to $10,000 for local projects, while larger or provincial initiatives may qualify for grants of up to $25,000. To be eligible, applicants must be a registered non-profit society or cooperative, charity, non-profit post-secondary institution, or registered association based in Nova Scotia. Businesses and individuals are not eligible to apply.
The funding supports projects that encourage older adults to stay active, healthy, and engaged in their communities. The program focuses on areas such as:
- Physical activity, mobility, and nutrition
- Reducing social isolation, strengthening social connections, and supporting mental health
- Building digital skills
- Intergenerational programs that foster knowledge and skill-sharing between seniors and youth
When planning their projects, organizations are encouraged to prioritize affordability, accessibility, inclusion, and engagement with culturally diverse and traditionally underrepresented groups. The program’s Planning Stream offers funding to help communities identify the needs and priorities of aging Nova Scotians. Projects must involve partnerships with local governments and consultations with seniors and other stakeholders. The goal is to understand community needs, available resources, and gaps, and to create solutions that help older adults remain in their homes.
To apply, review the detailed criteria in the Program Guidelines (PDF) and complete the application form (PDF). Make sure to check the form for details on the required supporting documents. Once everything is ready, email your completed application and supporting documents to agefriendly@novascotia.ca.
