Don Dixon, a 102-year-old veteran from Langford, BC, has received hundreds of thank-you letters from around the world in recognition of his military service to Canada during the Second World War. The letters express profound gratitude and appreciation for his sacrifice and dedication to the country.

For as long as Don could remember, he always focused on bringing a smile to other peoples faces. There was one exception, though – when he was called to serve in the second world war, he remarked that he did what he was asked to do and that was it.

Looking through an old photo album containing photos from his time as a Royal Canadian Air Force pilot revealed that his role went beyond simple duty. Flying both fighter planes and bombers over Europe, Don admitted the experience was thrilling, though not without its fears. There were moments when his plane’s tail was shot off, or flames erupted from both of the engines mid-flight. Even more frightening were the times unexploded ammunition or even explosives rattled inside his aircraft’s fuel tank. Yet, despite the danger, Don always managed to bring his plane and crew home safely. He said that he had to do it.

His bravery serving in the second world war earned him medals for valor and devotion, though Don never sought recognition. Marlene Graham, who met him through a neighbor, was struck by his humility. Moved by his story, she took to social media, urging people to express their gratitude to Don on Remembrance Day. The response was overwhelming with hundreds of cards and letters pouring in from around the world thanking Don for his bravery and sacrifice he made by serving his country in the war.

While Don appreciated the kind gestures, he was quick to remind everyone of the bigger picture. He emphasized the importance of remembering what he and others fought for: freedom, tolerance, and love. And, with a wink and a chuckle, he added that a smile from a stranger could mean just as much.
