The Annauma Community Foundation has launched its first Community Nominated Award, a significant milestone in recognizing and supporting local organizations in Nunavut. The award decision was made during consensus-based granting sessions, with representatives from various organizations participating, including Taya Tootoo from the Arctic Children and Youth Foundation, Holly McCann from the Nunavut Bilingual Education Society, Janis Devereaux from Skills Canada Nunavut, and Nai Eegeesiak from The Iqaluit Music Society.
The $100,000 award is designed to recognize and financially support local organizations in Nunavut that have made a significant impact in their communities. The Annauma Community Foundation emphasizes that this initiative reflects its commitment to helping community groups that truly understand and address the needs of their communities.
The Annauma Community Foundation is the first community foundation in Nunavut. It connects philanthropists, corporate partners, funders, and governments with opportunities to support community-driven solutions. “Annauma” is short for the Inuktitut word “Annaumakkaijiit,” meaning “helping people to stay ahead.” The foundation was created to help Inuit achieve their vision for Nunavut. Donors can become caring partners and contribute to Annauma’s five priority areas, which are: Inuit Children and Youth, Community Health and Wellbeing, Education and Learning, Arts and Culture, and Community-Identified Opportunities.
The Community Nominated Award aims to financially support a registered charity or non-profit organization that has made a significant impact in its community over the past year. Nominations will be accepted annually from June 1 to Aug. 30. The winner of the award will be announced by Sept. 30 of the each year.
Nunavummiut are encouraged to recommend any charities or non-profit organizations that they believe have had a positive impact on their communities through their programs, events, or other public initiatives. Nominators should be ready to show how the selected organization has addressed a community need in the past year and provide contact information for a representative of the organization.
