The Tsuut’ina Nation recently hosted its first community event, helping students get ready to go back to school.

The Sarsi, also known as Tsuut’ina, are an Indigenous group from Alberta, Canada, belonging to the Athabaskan (Dene) language family. The group hosted its first back-to-school community event on Friday, Aug. 29, to help children and families prepare for the new school year. The festival-style event included entertainment, a barbecue, and, most importantly, free school supplies for Nation students and families. Children received backpacks, water bottles, pens, pencils, paper, and even clothing. The event helped families get ready for school without having to worry about the cost of basic supplies.

For the organizers, the intention behind the event was to provide more than just supplies, not only to their community but also to other communities. Tsuut’ina Xakujagha (Minor Chief) Zach Manywounds said that not just Tsuut’ina, but communities across Canada, can really use this kind of effort from corporations wanting to help out.

The amazing turnout at the event showcased how communities coming together can do good things and rally around the kids. The organizers were excited by the response they received from everyone and are hoping to make this an annual event.
