Residents across Saint John, N.B., are participating in the city’s Green Machine program and playing a hands-on role in maintaining shared public spaces.
Across Atlantic Canada, communities are showing how small actions like picking up litter or cleaning parks can make a big difference. The Green Machine program in Saint John is helping residents take pride in their neighbourhoods by leading local cleanups and caring for shared spaces.
The Green Machine is a mobile cleanup trailer that provides residents with easy access to the tools needed to organize community-led cleanups. The initiative helps remove practical barriers and empowers neighbourhood groups, schools, and volunteers to take a hands-on role in caring for the spaces they share.
The Green Machine program runs from May 1 to June 14, when the 14-foot trailer filled with tools and supplies can be used by local groups for neighbourhood cleanups for free. Pre-bookings started on April 1, and city staff are available to confirm reservations to support community-led efforts.
The Green Machine is a good example of how similar programs across Canada can help create cleaner and more welcoming areas while strengthening community connections.
