The Nova Scotia Pick-Me-Up Program

Nova Scotia has launched The Great NS Pick-Me-Up program as a one-time litter facilitation program, which allows groups to organize neighbourhood litter cleanups, bringing the community together while keeping the space clean.

The Great Nova Scotia Pick-Me-Up (GNSPMU) is a volunteer program where anyone can help clean up litter in their community. Groups can choose a spot they care about, like a park, beach, trail, shoreline, roadway, or neighbourhood, and register it for a cleanup. After finishing, the groups are not required to clean that same place again, but they can sign up for more cleanups anywhere else in the province.

This program is run by Coastal Action and supported by local municipalities. It’s a great way for people to work together and keep Nova Scotia clean and beautiful. Groups registering for the Great NS Pick Me Up are provided with a free kit that includes clear garbage bags, blue recycling bags, a select number of nitrile gloves, and a data submission card. A leaflet outlining disposal procedures is also included in the kit. More information about disposal of litter is available here.

To register, please visit the Great Nova Scotia Pick-Me-Up website. Pre-packaged litter kits are available for pickup at Halifax Public Library branches or HRM Customer Service Centres during regular operating hours. You can also contact wasteless@halifax.ca for more information and collaborations.
