St. John’s-based non-profit The Gathering Place has opened a new accessible garden for residents, aiming to connect the community and help people build skills.
The new shared community garden is called the Hopeful Garden and is located on the corner of Barnes Road and Barnes Place in St. John’s. It opened last month, and the non-profit refers to the garden as a place of growth, learning, spiritual renewal, and connection. The Hopeful Garden is a fully accessible green space for guests of the Gathering Place and the surrounding area to enjoy the outdoors and learn gardening and horticultural skills.
The Gathering Place is a non-profit organization in St. John’s that supports people experiencing homelessness and other challenges. The non-profit’s community garden aims to help people learn new skills and build confidence. The garden gives participants the chance to grow plants, work with others, and discover their abilities while making a positive contribution to the community.
The garden is bringing neighbours together by encouraging volunteers to share their gardening knowledge and mentor participants. Organizers hope the garden will create meaningful connections, provide a sense of purpose, and remind people that even small acts of kindness and support can make a big difference.
