Seniors Get Together for the 55+ BC Senior Games

The 2026 55+ BC Senior Games in Kamloops have been a great success for senior athletes from the West Kootenay-Boundary area.

A total of 144 participants from around 18 local communities competed for Zone 6 and brought home 87 medals from the Kamloops 55+ BC Senior Games, including 39 gold, 31 silver, and 17 bronze. The 55+ Games Society is now encouraging more local seniors to stay active, get involved, and join the team for the 2027 55+ Senior Games in Surrey next year.

The corresponding secretary for Zone 6, Trail swimmer Steve Miller, is encouraging more local seniors to get involved, meet new people, and stay active. He said participation had dipped during COVID-19 to 73 but is slowly growing again and rose to about 95 athletes at the 2025 Nanaimo Games. More volunteers and athletes are needed to help seniors enjoy an active lifestyle.

The Senior Games encourage people aged 55 and older to stay active, improve their fitness, and take part in sports and recreational activities. Just as importantly, the Games help seniors build connections and community while enjoying friendly competition. Each year, the Games offer a variety of activities for different interests and fitness levels. In Kamloops, more than 3,000 people took part in 28 events, including new activities such as cornhole, trail running, and gravel biking, along with popular favourites like cribbage, 8-ball, bocce, and darts.

The next Senior Games will be held in Surrey in September 2027. For more information or to donate, contact Steve Miller at 55plusz6corsec@gmail.com or text 250-986-5162.
