The residents of Moose Jaw got together for their fourth Walk for Warmth earlier this week to help those in need find a safe place to live.

The Walk for Warmth is organized by Square One Community Inc., which was created in 2021 after members of the COVID Community Response Committee recognized that housing instability was a serious issue in Moose Jaw. The Walk for Warmth 2026 fundraiser aims to raise $300,000 by the end of March to help more people experiencing homelessness in Moose Jaw. At present, 50 people have been assessed for housing and are waiting for help.

The community was invited to get involved as either walkers who gather pledges, pledgers who sponsor walkers, or sponsors who provide funding. With community support, the team hopes to expand its staff and help more people find a safe place to call home.

Della Ferguson, president of Square One Community Inc., says the purpose of the Walk for Warmth fundraiser is to raise money to grow the program and help more people facing housing insecurity in Moose Jaw. She says the organization has already helped 60 people move out of unstable housing, which has made a big difference in their lives.

The walk took place on March 14, starting at the Square One office on Fairford Street West. Participants walked through downtown and stopped at local organizations supporting people in need, including Willow Lodge, Hope Ministries, John Howard Society, and The Salvation Army. The event finished at Zion Church. You can learn more about the initiative here.
