Kamloops YMCA-YWCA’s Y Women’s Emergency Shelter has been providing a safe space for Kamloops women and children fleeing violence and helping its residents in any way possible.
The shelter offers 23 beds and helps hundreds of people every year, while also offering space for pets. The shelter has been operational in its current location for over 30 years and has always seen a constant need for the space.
The Kamloops YMCA shelter supports more than 300 women and children each year, with its seven rooms and 23 beds. Each room is shared by a family, whether it’s a mother with one child or several. Staff work hard to make the shelter a safe and comfortable place, offering activities and support to help families plan their next steps. The shelter staff also help residents connect with community services so they can rebuild their lives and gain strength and confidence.
The shelter offers wraparound support to help families during a difficult transition. Children can access counselling, while women receive legal support and help with daily needs, so both moms and kids can thrive. Staff make sure families are supported with things like school drop-offs, snacks, and birthday celebrations to help life feel more normal. You can donate to the Y Women’s Emergency Shelter through the YMCA website.
