The community in Aldergrove came together on Saturday, Sept. 19, to support Meals on Wheels Langley through the Grand Parade fundraising walk as part of the Meals on Wheels Langley fundraiser.
While Meals on Wheels delivers nutritious meals to seniors by car, 68 walkers, organized into 11 teams, took part in the walk to help raise money and support the organization’s work to make sure local seniors have access to healthy food.
The annual walk started at the Firehouse Café on 272 Street, and the community helped raise more than $8,400. The café is the local headquarters for the charity, which brings nourishing, balanced meals to seniors and others who have difficulty cooking for themselves.
Meals on Wheels executive director Shannon Woykin shared that participation has grown, with more walkers joining this year compared with last year’s walk, helping to build a stronger sense of community. The walk also helps bring awareness to the cause.
While Meals on Wheels in Langley has a small team, it is supported by a large group of about 375 volunteer drivers and food preparation volunteers who make it work. The kitchen staff at Firehouse Café puts together home-cooked meals every day, while the café functions as a social enterprise to raise more funds for those in need.
The walkers started at 11 a.m., heading down 29 Avenue and completing either a single or double circuit through Aldergrove. The walk represented the community’s support and care for local seniors.
