Emily Kosack, 95, has spent over three decades volunteering at the Holy Family Nursing Home in Winnipeg.
Emily Kosack began volunteering in 1992 at Holy Family Nursing Home when her mother lived there, and since then she has spent her time doing simple but meaningful things like helping with meals, leading bingo games, and handing out small gifts to brighten people’s days. Emily says she enjoys helping others and feels good being there.
Kosack has overcome her own adversities to help others. After breaking her hip a couple of years ago, she uses a walker to get around. She is a cancer survivor and has suffered a couple of heart attacks, yet nothing has stopped her from doing what she loves most: helping others.
At 95, Kosack loves to walk and brightens the lives of everyone she meets. Every afternoon, she walks about three kilometres around the building and visits residents. She believes it’s important to stay busy and have a purpose. Staff at the nursing home say volunteers like Kosack are the heart of the home, helping with meals, activities, and simply spending time with residents. As part of a group of dedicated volunteers, Emily is seen as an inspiration who makes a real difference in people’s lives every single day.
Kosack says she will continue to volunteer for as long as she can and hopes more people will come to volunteer.
