Doctors in Manitoba recently launched a new initiative to get Manitobans to move and get healthy throughout the winter months. The challenge encouraged Manitobans to choose and follow ways to improve their health with a promised prize for winners.
They created Getting Healthy to offer practical advice and ways for people to get healthy during the winter season. The pieces of advice included moving more, getting better sleep, healthy eating, and stress reduction techniques, along with routine screenings.
The research commissioned by Doctors Manitoba revealed that about 87% of Manitobans believe they aren’t doing enough or could be doing more when it comes to getting healthy. The grand prize for the lucky participant is a trip for two, including airfare, meals, accommodations, and local adventures such as a beluga viewing trip and fat biking tour.
Doctors Manitoba launched the winter challenge to motivate people to improve their health through advice, encouragement, and incentives. President Dr. Randy Guzman acknowledges that winter can be a tough time to start but encourages taking small steps, with prizes and winter-friendly ideas to help along the way.
Over 18,000 Manitobans took part in last year’s Winter Challenge. Over 88% said they followed through with their pledge to get healthy, and 93% said they were planning to take another step towards getting healthy in the coming months.
