The Slaight Family Foundation is donating $13 million to 13 Canadian humanitarian organizations over the next two years to fill urgent gaps in global aid caused by funding reductions from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
The funds will help fix urgent gaps in global help for people in crisis. The cut in funding has had a harsh impact, as child protection programs have shut down, more children are being forced into armed groups, and food and medical aid have been cut back. UNICEF says that in 2024, most of the life-saving food for malnourished children in Ethiopia came from USAID. With organizations losing their funding, clean water, health care, education, and safety for women and girls are also at risk.
Gary Slaight from The Slaight Family Foundation shared that Canadian groups are working hard to provide life-saving help in crisis areas like Bangladesh, Yemen, and South Sudan, and they need help now more than ever. Slaight hopes that the funding will keep health care, food, education, and protection available for people who need it most.
All 13 organizations receiving support are Canadian-led or backed by Canadians, showing Canada’s strong role in global aid. The $13 million will be distributed to 13 Canadian-led or supported organizations, with each receiving $1 million. These organizations include the Canadian Red Cross, UNICEF Canada, Save the Children, World Vision, and War Child Canada.
