For Pet Hunger Awareness Day, PetSmart Charities of Canada awarded a $100,000 grant to The Food Bank of York Region. The funding will help families in need by ensuring they can put food on their tables and also care for their pets.
The announcement was made in partnership with The Food Bank of York Region and Feed Ontario. The grant will support local food banks in Markham, Richmond Hill, and Newmarket, helping families and their pets during challenging times.
PetSmart Charities of Canada created Pet Hunger Awareness Day in 2023 to highlight that pets are also affected by food insecurity. With more than 12 million Canadian households owning a dog or cat, supporting pets is essential for family health and well-being. Last year, a $300,000 grant from PetSmart Charities helped Humane Canada launch the country’s first interactive Pet Food Bank Map, which now shows 343 programs that have supported more than 20,000 pets. Canadians are encouraged to donate pet food to local food banks so no pet or their family goes hungry.
PetSmart Charities of Canada is dedicated to making the world a better place for pets and those who love them. Through its in-store adoption program in PetSmart stores nationwide, it has helped over 400,000 pets find loving homes. Since 1999, the organization has donated more than $40 million.
