Meals on Wheels P.E.I. launched in December 2022 to provide healthy, affordable meals to those in need while supporting their overall well-being. Last year, the program delivered nearly 68,000 meals across the Island.
The program is overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors representing different chapters across the province. To meet growing demand, Meals on Wheels P.E.I. recently hired its own chef, Mike Silvester, in August. He supports the Rural Routes program, which delivers frozen meals for $5 each to seven rural communities, including Eastern Kings, St. Peter’s Bay, Vernon River, Belfast, North Shore, Hunter River, and North Rustico. Silvester says he enjoys the challenge of cooking for people who appreciate traditional dishes while also creating healthy, creative meals.
Meals on Wheels P.E.I. has been assisting Islanders since 2022, with 12 local chapters delivering hot meals to seniors, people with disabilities, and others who may have difficulty accessing food. The Rural Routes program alone delivers about 180 meals each week, a number expected to rise. Volunteers play a vital role in the program, using their own vehicles to deliver pre-packed meals while building meaningful connections with those they serve.
Those interested in volunteering or supporting the cause can reach the organization through the Meals on Wheels P.E.I. website, by calling 902-969-2780, or by emailing info@mowpei.org. Islanders who would like to receive meals can call 211 and request to register for Meals on Wheels.
