The community of Main Brook, Newfoundland’s Northern Peninsula, celebrated the graduation of its sole graduate, 18-year-old Breanna Bromley-Clarke.
Bromley-Clarke celebrated her high school graduation with about 85 guests from the community earlier this month. Her prom day was filled with photos, a decorated gym, and a nice meal shared with all her guests. Clarke received support from the local community and businesses during her time in school, helping to raise approximately $45,000 for the Janeway Children’s Hospital in St. John’s, North Louisiana.
According to Mayor Ian Brenton, even a single graduation is a significant occasion in their 200-person town. Amanda Parrill, the principal of the school, stated that the graduation of a single student was equally as noteworthy as more significant school functions. Clarke made it personal by giving flowers to important women in her life, like her mom, teachers, and healthcare workers.
Being the only graduate at her school, Clarke was content despite missing out on customary graduation celebrations like senior skip day, sunrise hangouts, and future reunions. She invited her volleyball friends from another school to join in the celebration and raised money for the event by selling tickets and holding a yard sale.
Although Breanna is unsure if she will return after graduating from Memorial University in Corner Brook, where she plans to study nursing, she will always be proud of her small, tight-knit community and the memories of her memorable graduation night.
