When the Mount Pearl Community Supper program started seven years ago, it used to feed around a hundred people. Currently, around 300 vulnerable people are getting a weekly meal from this community initiative.
Scott Hillyer, owner of Coffee Matters, started the program 7 years ago to help his community. Scott Hillyer and his team of around 12 volunteers from various Mount Pearl churches start cooking at 10 a.m. every Wednesday and usually serve about 300 meals by 6 p.m.
The Mount Pearl Community Supper program runs like any other takeout, serving hot food at the door on a first-come, first-served basis. The menu changes every two weeks, ranging from chicken cacciatore to turkey dinner to mac and cheese with meatballs. The program is hosted at a different church every time, and the community is updated through regular posts on Mount Pearl Community’s Supper Program’s Facebook page.
The Mount Pearl Community Supper is open to individuals and families without any registration requirement. Local sponsors pitch in sometimes as the organizers serve hot meals and good vibes to all those who attend. Hillyer’s non-profit does not receive any government funding but relies on donations from the community and his own business.
