Montreal’s Garden of the World and First Nations

Montreal’s Jardins du Monde & des Premières Nations is built by the community for the community and brings together people and plants from across the world.

The community has turned an empty lot in the busy Milton Park neighbourhood of Montreal into a green space that mixes plants from around the world with Indigenous traditions. The garden offers people a place to connect with nature, share their cultures, and grow food together. Geneviève Dubé, who helped start the project, says it’s special to have a space like this in such a crowded part of the city.

Local residents, organizations, and architects worked together to plan and build the community garden. This garden is the fourth community space in Milton Park, featuring plants, workshops, and a gathering space that celebrates different cultures and brings people together.

This garden was designed with the help of Indigenous knowledge and community traditions. It features sacred Indigenous plants like tobacco, sweetgrass, sage, and cedar; vegetables from many cultures, like okra and basil; and a boreal forest garden filled with native fruits and wildflowers. The garden is located on land that belongs to the Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) people and reflects Indigenous traditions while welcoming both Indigenous and newcomer communities in Milton Park.
