The Almage Senior Community Centre in Montreal’s Hochelaga borough spent November showing how small acts of kindness can make a big difference. The centre dedicated the month to a series of community-focused projects, bringing members together to craft, assemble meal-based care packages, and raise funds for local organizations.
Every Tuesday, members participated in activities that ranged from crocheting hats and scarves to preparing care packages filled with food and toiletries. A Christmas-themed sale during the final event of the month rounded out the initiative, raising nearly $200 and collecting almost 500 items to support community organizations across the city.
The month-long initiative, called the “Month of Giving,” allowed members to contribute in ways that suited their abilities. Some crafted handmade items, while others volunteered their time setting up events and helping with sales. Together, they created a meaningful impact that extended well beyond the walls of the senior centre.
Organizers and participants emphasized that giving back is about more than donations. It is about connection, generosity, and the joy of supporting others in need. The centre plans to continue these efforts throughout the holiday season, with events such as a Christmas party, a pajama party, and additional fundraising activities to keep the spirit of giving alive.
The Month of Giving demonstrated that when communities come together, even small contributions can bring warmth and support to those who need it most.
