Manitoba Business Enables Communities to Grow Fresh Food Affordably

Harsh winters, with temperatures plummeting to -30 degrees, make accessing fresh, locally grown food a challenge across Canada. To address this, Manitoba-based Les Verts Living, in partnership with T&T Seeds, has developed affordable indoor hydroponic systems that enable households, communities, retailers, and restaurants to grow fresh, high-quality produce year-round.

Rachel Green and her father Kerry, the owners of Les Verts Living, are passionate about agriculture and committed to making fresh, leafy greens available to people across the province. Their indoor garden systems help local people grow food easily. This approach aims to improve food security and allow anyone to produce enough greens to share with family and friends or even sell to their local community, just like Rachel has done for years.

Developing a system that works in Manitoba’s extreme cold temperatures posed a unique challenge. Les Verts Living began growing lettuce indoors in 2018 to serve the local Winnipeg market, paving the way for innovative local food production.

Rachel explains that their systems allow communities to grow fresh food affordably and year-round, helping the communities take advantage of existing spaces and scale up production in a responsible manner. Schools, senior care facilities, community centres, and others use their systems to bring people of all ages together for shared activities.
