Fredericton’s Grade 8 student, Shamekh Garar, has an amazing way of giving back to his community. Garar has raised enough money to donate 27 boxes of potatoes to Greener Village.

Devon Middle School held its second annual potato fundraiser, where students sold 15-pound boxes of potatoes to raise money for their year-end celebration. Grade 8 student Shamekh Garar was motivated by the $100 prize for top sales and spent his weekends knocking on doors in the Barkers Point and Maugerville areas. When some people said they didn’t need potatoes but wanted to donate money, Shamekh suggested using those funds to buy potatoes for the Greener Village food bank. Greener Village CEO Alex Boyd presented Shamekh with a “Hunger Buster Award” for his large donation of potatoes. He has since been dubbed the “King of Potatoes.”

The idea was special to him because his own family has received help from the organization. Thanks to his efforts, he raised enough to donate 27 boxes of potatoes.
