The United Way Estevan’s 49th annual telethon closed with a record total of $415,149, far surpassing its goal of $360,049 for member agencies and community impact projects. Last year’s off-air record of $380,676 was also exceeded.
The 33 hour fundraiser saw its momentum surge in the afternoon of Oct. 18. At 2 p.m. the total was just over $195,000 when two major donations arrived. United Mine Workers of America Local 7606 and Westmoreland Mining LLC contributed $85,616 through employee fundraising and a matching grant. SaskPower soon followed with $119,997, raised by staff and matched by the corporation. By 2:45 p.m. the telethon had surpassed $400,000 for the first time.
United Way Estevan president Brittney Brokenshire contacted national president and CEO Dan Clement to share the news. Clement noted the importance of community services as many Canadians face financial insecurity, and said the results in Estevan will make a meaningful impact. Brokenshire invited him to attend the 50th telethon next year.
The fundraiser began at 8 a.m. on Oct. 17 at the Estevan branch of the Royal Canadian Legion and was broadcast on Access Now and online. It opened with a $25,000 anonymous donation, followed by another for $15,000, helping push the total past $100,000 within four hours. By the end of day one the total reached $153,206, the best first day in the telethon’s history.
Entertainment filled the broadcast, with performances from students, singers, dancers, pianists, bands and more. Students from Estevan Comprehensive School led the annual overnight ECS Takeover. Member agencies described how they will use the funds, and volunteers supported the event in many roles.
A quilt raffle by the Heart and Hands Quilting Guild raised $2,025, and 111 hand crafted auction items raised $7,330. Surplus funds will be allocated by the committee to member agencies.
