An act of vandalism that damaged dozens of monuments at Moncton’s Elmwood Cemetery is now seeing progress thanks to community support.
Cemetery staff report that most of the 41 monuments toppled during the incident have been repaired. Many of the stones are part of the cemetery’s heritage section and date back more than a century.
Elmwood Cemetery president Jim Rodgers credited both staff and the wider community for the repairs. With financial and physical assistance from the public, 37 of the 41 monuments have been returned to their original positions. Management said the response from the community was overwhelming, with many people offering help and expressing concern over the vandalism.
The cemetery plans to introduce new security measures when it reopens in May. Police have not released updates on the investigation, and no suspects or leads have been identified.
