The residents of Estevan City in Saskatchewan are rallying around to help four-year-old Aubrey Dyck, who needs expensive therapy and an out-of-country surgery to be able to walk again.
The community got together and participated in the recent fundraisers at the Estevan Church of God, helping the family raise about $4,000. There was a family night supper on July 25, followed by a pancake breakfast the following day. Aubrey’s father, Tanner, was overwhelmed with the attendance and support they received from the community.
The family night dinner offered barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs, along with salads, cookies, and refreshments. Participants also took part in activities such as craft stations, yard games, bouncy castles, and Play-Doh. The next morning’s breakfast featured a variety of homemade items from the local farmers’ market, as Tanner had to replenish supplies for the attendance that far exceeded his expectations.
The family has created a GoFundMe page, which has already raised more than $34,000 of its $90,000 goal. With the support of the community and other recent fundraisers, the family has so far raised over $40,000.
Tanner says that the community has been very supportive, and the family is planning more events during the summer, such as a steak dinner and a bottle drive. The family has been able to save enough money to book Aubrey’s surgery and related costs. Aubrey’s surgery is scheduled for early October in New Jersey, which will help her walk again, as right now she moves around by shuffling on her knees or hopping. The $90,000 amount will cover the surgery, travel, follow-up visits, and another trip the next month to see a specialist.
