Community Heroes Support Evacuees of Wildfire in Eastern Manitoba

It is during adversity that the true heroes are revealed. Amidst the devastating fires in Manitoba, the community of Lac du Bonnet is supporting each other while a local grocer is making sure that the evacuation centres and first responders are well supplied.

Hanis Patel, the owner of Campbell’s Foods in Lac du Bonnet, moved to the community about 4-5 months ago, and is ensuring that he helps those escaping the devastating fires. He says this is the least he can do to thank the community for the warm welcome his family received just months ago.

Patel shares that the wildfires have disrupted the regular way of life for their vibrant community of welcoming and lovely people. As a local business owner, Patel has been making sure the evacuation centres have enough food, water, and fruit cups for people as soon as they arrive. His team of volunteers visit the local fire department and RCMP station every morning to drop off water, juice, fruit, and snacks for those fighting the fire.

Patel shares that he is able to supply food from his grocery store as a way to comfort evacuees and support the people doing such tough and important work during this difficult time. Many evacuees are worried, scared, and uncertain about how long they’ll be away or if they’ll have a home to return to. Even small comforts, like a snack or a kind word, mean a lot to them during this hard time.
