The Cape Breton Welcome Network’s new Buddy Program pairs newcomers with local volunteers, called “welcomers,” who help them adjust to life in the community.
Tracy Nguyen, from Vietnam, moved with her husband and two children in December and found it stressful to raise kids in a new country without family support, particularly with language barriers at school. Through the program, she was paired with local mom Terri-Leigh Holbeche, who has helped her feel more confident and better understand the school system.
The Buddy Program matches newcomers with volunteers who share common interests to encourage strong connections. Volunteers do not need special skills, but they must commit to three months of regular communication and have lived in Cape Breton for at least two years. Their role is to offer simple support, such as showing someone around or sharing local tips.
Since its launch in August, three matches have already been made, and interest is growing. Coordinator Sumayya Mullassery, who moved from India two and a half years ago, said she wished a program like this had been available when she first arrived. The Buddy Program is open to anyone new to Cape Breton, whether from another country or another part of Nova Scotia, and helps with challenges such as language, housing, and adjusting to winter.
