CANSTRUCTION in Lethbridge Helps with Food Insecurity

Since 2011, Lethbridge’s annual event, Canstruction, has combined creativity with generosity, turning canned foods into community support. In 2024, the event raised $36,000, including 10,000 cans of food for the local food banks.

Canstruction is an anti-hunger project across North America that helps raise funds and donate food to local food banks. Seven teams participated in this year’s fundraising competition, including teams from Chinook High School, Lethbridge Polytechnic, and the University of Lethbridge.

The canned food structures are on display at the Centre Village Mall till April 3rd. Visitors will judge and vote for each structure created by the participants. The food will then be sent to the Interfaith Food Bank, Lethbridge Food Bank, and food banks at the University and Polytechnic.

The students from Chinook High School created a structure called “It Takes A (Bikini Bottom) Village,” featuring SpongeBob SquarePants, his friend Gary the Snail, and a Bikini Bottom seascape. Their theme showcases the importance of building community and supporting one another. The structure consists of over 1,000 cans, and students raised over $2,000 and an additional 150 food items in total donations.

The event aims to raise awareness about food insecurity and directly help those in need in the Lethbridge community. This event is sponsored by WILD 95.5 and All Hits B-93.3 FM. You can learn more about the event and donate at CANSTRUCTION.
