Calgary Community Works Together to Restore City’s Vandalized Icon

After vandals defaced the vintage Cadillac atop a local business, the community came together to restore the city’s icon to its original glory, showcasing the community spirit of Calgarians.

The local radio station ran a story about the unfortunate incident of vandalism to the vintage 1953 Cadillac perched on top of Angel’s Drive-In in Bowness for decades. The radio hosts offered $5,000 from the station’s funds to help the restaurant restore the car and asked the community to step in.

Two companies came forward to help. Jason Steiert from Stonewall Foundations Ltd., a local company, called and offered to remove the car from the roof with a crane and take it to a body shop for free. 15 employees at Strathmore’s Legacy Speed and Body have donated their time and effort to restore the vintage Cadillac. Their goal is to restore the car’s exterior to be better than before and paint it in its original “Matador Red,” which was the factory colour for 1963.

Lordco donated all parts and materials required for the restoration, while the community’s response has been overwhelming as people from across the city have reached out to the restaurant just to check in and show their support.
