Brandon Women’s Resource Centre Empowers and Builds Community

Brandon Women’s Resource Centre has launched a new Empowered Traditions program that is helping women connect with their culture, have fun, and build a supportive community.

The Women’s Resource Centre in Brandon has been helping and supporting vulnerable women through various programs while promoting respect, diversity, and equality within the new community. The new Empowered Traditions workshops operate from December to June and have brought together a supportive group of women who assist each other in healing from past traumas.

Women participating in the program work on traditional crafts while learning cultural teachings from an elder. Empowered Traditions is the first long-term program that allows women to connect in a fun and safe environment, so they feel comfortable reaching out in times of crisis.

Kim Iwasiuk, the Women’s Resource Centre’s director of counselling and advocacy, often talks about the importance of these bonds, especially in Manitoba, where intimate partner violence rates are high, disproportionately affecting Indigenous women. Programs like Empowered Traditions help women feel safe and supported. The cultural connections give them strength to live healthier lives.

The Women’s Resource Centre in Brandon has an active community and a wide range of events and opportunities to participate in around the year.
