The Yellowknife Community Foundation has officially launched the Northern Legacy Fundraising Campaign, aiming to raise $3 million by 2028. The campaign kicked off earlier this month at the Yellowknife Visitors Centre, where Executive Director Korry Garvey and Chair Laurie Gault outlined how the funds will be used to support communities across the Northwest Territories.
Diavik Diamond Mines has provided a significant boost to the campaign, contributing $225,000 in seed funding as the title sponsor. In addition, the company will match up to $100,000 in donations made during “Giving Tuesday” on December 3. This initial funding is a crucial step in building the Northern Legacy Fund, which aims to create a long-lasting resource for community initiatives.
Once the $3 million target is reached, the Northern Legacy Fund will begin distributing approximately $125,000 annually to support local projects, ensuring the fund continues to grow and provide lasting benefits. “This fund is designed to be a permanent resource for communities,” said Korry Garvey. Grants will support a wide range of initiatives aligned with the foundation’s mission, including youth programs, environmental projects, the arts, and healthcare.
Korry Garvey mentioned that anyone can contribute to the fund, whether through one-time donations or larger contributions. “Every donation, big or small, helps us get closer to our goal,” he said. Laurie Gault added that most grants will be distributed to non-profits and charities, with the first round of funding expected by 2028 if the campaign meets its target.
The Northern Legacy Fund represents a significant step forward for community development in the Northwest Territories. With the support of generous donors and corporate partners like Diavik Diamond Mines, the Yellowknife Community Foundation is creating a sustainable source of funding that will benefit generations to come.
