Winnipeg Community Raises Over $40,000 for Orphaned African Children

A local art event in Winnipeg, hosted by Grands ‘n’ More, a charity organization made up of grandmothers caring for African children orphaned due to AIDS, saw the community come together in an inspiring show of support. Thousands of art pieces were donated, and the event successfully raised an impressive $40,000 for the organization’s vital work.

On October 6th, 2024, Grands ‘n’ More hosted their annual Art from the Attic sale at St. Vital Centre. Over 3,000 art pieces donated by individuals in Winnipeg were showcased at this event, with many items priced under $50. The event attracted hundreds of attendees, leading to impressive sales figures that reached tens of thousands of dollars.

Grands ‘n’ More Winnipeg is a group made up of grandmothers and others who support the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign by the Stephen Lewis Foundation. They aim to help community organizations in sub-Saharan Africa improve the lives of grandmothers who are raising their own and other orphaned grandchildren. Grands ‘n’ More Winnipeg expressed their gratitude on Facebook, noting that the community’s support resulted in the sale of over 2,600 artworks, generating more than $40,000. The joy of the shoppers was palpable, and the team found immense satisfaction in witnessing attendees discover pieces they truly loved.

The event not only celebrated local creativity but also served a meaningful purpose: a community coming together to help others who were in need. All funds raised from the event were directed to the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign, which will further help their cause and efforts.

The success of the sale underscored the power of community involvement and the impact of collective efforts. It was a heartwarming reminder of how art can bring people and communities together while supporting important causes. As shoppers left with their new treasures, they also contributed to a larger mission of compassion and care in their community.

Grands ‘n’ More Winnipeg looked forward to continuing this tradition, fostering a love for art while supporting those in need both locally and abroad. If you missed this year’s event, keep a lookout for next year! They host this annually; for more information, check out their website.
