As the Canada Post strike continues to impact industries nationwide, Montreal non-profit MultiCaf has adopted creative measures to collect donations ahead of the holiday season. With mail services unavailable, the community has come together to support families in need. Volunteers have taken to the streets, going door-to-door to collect monetary contributions and bags of non-perishable food, which will be redistributed to thousands of households in the area.
The holiday season is a critical time for MultiCaf. Typically, the non-profit sends out letters by mail to request donations and encourage community members to drop off non-perishable items at their centre. However, with the postal strike in effect, the organization adapted by having volunteers visit more than 7,000 homes to deliver letters by hand. These letters included a list of non-perishable items, a donation bag, and a request for financial contributions.
This grassroots approach has been vital for ensuring enough funds and food are raised to help the families relying on MultiCaf’s services. The door-to-door campaign has also provided an opportunity to connect directly with residents, spreading awareness about the importance of supporting those in need and fostering a sense of community responsibility.
Many volunteers, including high school students, have stepped up to assist with the campaign. They described the experience as rewarding despite the challenges, emphasizing the importance of helping others, especially during difficult times. Their efforts reflect a shared commitment to the well-being of the Côte-des-Neiges community.
Donations collected between December 11 and 18 will benefit over 16,000 households in the region. The organization aims to provide more than just sustenance; it seeks to deliver hope, kindness, and a sense of connection through its efforts. The strong community response highlights the collective spirit and dedication to giving back during the holiday season.
Established in 1989, MultiCaf supports low-income individuals and families in Côte-des-Neiges through food aid, social connection, and access to resources. The organization provides affordable meals and food assistance, helping hundreds maintain a nutritious diet while offering a welcoming space to combat loneliness and isolation. MultiCaf also collaborates with universities and institutions on research related to social issues like homelessness, housing, and nutrition, and operates a baby formula distribution program.
