Toronto offers supportive housing for homeless people

The University Health Network (UHN) has partnered with Fred Victor, a non-profit housing organization, to provide 51 permanent homes that offer health and social support to individuals who are homeless and frequently visit its hospitals. This new supportive housing project is aimed at helping Toronto’s unhoused population, particularly those who often rely on emergency rooms. Supported by one of Canada’s largest hospital networks, the project will offer on-site doctors, mental health resources, and food programs. The initiative is intended to reduce pressure on emergency services while giving vulnerable individuals the stability and care they need to rebuild their lives.

The newly opened Dunn House in Toronto is preparing to welcome its first residents over the next few weeks. At the opening ceremony, officials, including Mayor Olivia Chow, highlighted that Dunn House represents hope for the community. The University Health Network (UHN) has allocated all 51 apartments in the building for individuals who frequently use its hospitals and are ready to move in. This initiative is focused on providing supportive housing for unhoused individuals with complex medical and social needs.

The modular, four-storey building includes a health clinic and fully furnished studio apartments equipped with a kitchenette, living area, bedroom, and bathroom. Fifteen of the units are barrier-free for those with mobility challenges. Dunn House residents will have access to a variety of community-based supports in addition to medical care, including psychiatric help, case management support, legal assistance, harm reduction resources, and prepared meals.

The building will be staffed 24 hours a day by professionals with expertise in areas such as trauma care. This innovative model effectively combines housing and healthcare, offering comprehensive support to help residents succeed.

Toronto, like many cities across the country, is experiencing a rise in homelessness due to the high cost of living, mental health challenges, and the opioid addiction crisis. The city’s shelters are full, with about 12,000 people relying on them. Additionally, several hundred people are living on the streets, in parks, or in encampments throughout Toronto.
