Canadian actor Tom Jackson wants to inspire fellow Canadians to help keep unhoused people warm by donating them a pair of socks and gloves this winter. He has launched a campaign called Santa’s Crazy Sox Box, aiming to inspire participation across the country in spreading warmth and kindness. The campaign invites people to pack a box with socks, caps, gloves, and warm clothing and donate it to a local shelter, which will distribute the items to those in need.

The idea for the initiative began during the filming of Sullivan’s Crossing in Halifax last winter. Jackson, along with crew member Lori Bellefontaine, decided to take action after witnessing the harsh conditions faced by those living in encampments. Together, they collected and delivered hundreds of socks—between 500 and 1,000 pairs—to an encampment near City Hall. In 2023, Jackson partnered with community member Steve Wilsack, who had been moved to help after seeing the growing number of people in need in Halifax. Their efforts demonstrate that small acts of kindness can have a significant impact.

The campaign has expanded this year to include “crazy socks,” caps, gloves, and other warm clothing items. Jackson was recently seen delivering a box of these items to Soul’s Harbour Rescue Mission in Halifax, highlighting the campaign’s reach and ongoing commitment to helping those in need.

According to Michelle Porter, the CEO of Soul’s Harbour Rescue Mission, the demand for assistance is higher than ever. She notes that more people are living in poverty or facing homelessness, with many residing in tents due to a lack of housing options. This sentiment is echoed by numerous charities across the country, all of which are witnessing a growing need for support.

The organizers of Santa’s Crazy Sox Box Campaign are optimistic about its potential to unite Canadians in a shared mission of compassion. They encourage everyone to participate by packing a box, filling it with socks and other winter essentials, and delivering it to a local shelter. These shelters will ensure that the items reach those who need them most.
