During National Trucking Week, celebrated in the first week of September, Kirt McDougall of Bison Transport was honoured as the CTA/Volvo Trucks Canada National Driver of the Year by The Canadian Trucking Alliance. Prior to receiving this national recognition, McDougall earned the title of 2023 Saskatchewan Driver of the Year. He was chosen for this prestigious award due to his outstanding performance both on and off the road. Along with maintaining a high level of safety and professionalism, McDougall has dedicated much of his free time to supporting others within his community.
McDougall has been driving for Bison Transport since October 18, 2011, and was selected as the national recipient from a pool of seven provincial finalists for 2023. The National Driver of the Year award is the highest honour available to professional truck drivers in Canada. It recognizes McDougall not only for his commitment to safety and professionalism but also for his community involvement.
Based in Saskatoon as a long combination vehicle (LCV) turnpike driver, McDougall has achieved an impressive 1.85 million consecutive accident-free kilometres, demonstrating his dedication to safe driving and responsible road behaviour.
McDougall’s contributions go far beyond his driving record. He is widely respected for his generosity and strong desire to help others. Alongside his wife, he volunteers to assist people facing mental health and addiction challenges. McDougall has also supported his colleagues at Bison Transport, raising funds for victims of the Humboldt Broncos bus tragedy and providing food and essential supplies to those in need within his community. According to a press release from the CTA, McDougall sets an example through his actions, showing deep compassion and a readiness to help, no matter the cause.
