The Order of British Columbia is the province’s highest honour, recognizing citizens who have excelled in various fields and made significant contributions to their communities, the people of British Columbia, and beyond. Established on April 21, 1989, the Order has been awarded to individuals from all regions of the province.
Honourees are selected from hundreds of nominations by an Advisory Council, with appointments made by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. The council includes prominent members such as the Chief Justice of British Columbia, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, university presidents, and past recipients of the Order.
For 2024, 12 individuals are being honoured for their contributions in areas such as healthcare, food and agriculture, the arts, and the environment. Premier David Eby praised the recipients, noting that they have dedicated their lives to making British Columbia a better place. Among the 12 honourees this year are several B.C. business leaders, including Don Mattrick, Gary Segal, John Anderson, and Karimah Es Sabar, who will receive the province’s highest honour in September for their achievements and contributions.
