Ellie Black will represent Canada at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games for the fourth time. The 28-year-old Halifax native will become the first Canadian artistic gymnast to compete at four Olympic Games, as announced by Gymnastics Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee. Canada’s most decorated Pan Am gymnast, Black has won 10 medals between the 2015 and 2019 Games to her credit. Black was Canada’s flag-bearer for the closing ceremony in Lima.
She spoke to the media during a warmup at the 2024 Canadian Gymnastics Championships in Gatineau, Quebec on June 7, 2024. Black says that she is thrilled to have qualified for the Canadian WAG Paris Olympic Games team. She feels a lot of pride and gratitude heading into what will be her fourth Olympic Games. This is an incredible accomplishment for Black, and she is excited to keep building with her Olympic teammates and looks forward to putting up a great effort in the upcoming Paris Olympics.
Ellie Black placed fourth in the balance beam final at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Canada’s best-ever finish in a women’s Olympic artistic gymnastics event. She also placed fifth in the women’s all-around at the 2016 Rio Games and helped Canada to a fifth-place finish in the team event at the 2012 London Games. Ellie Black won’t be the only Nova Scotian at the Paris Olympics. Truro’s David Kikuchi will be a WAG coach, Martha Purdy a WAG physiotherapist, and Lori Dithurbide from Grand Etang a WAG mental performance consultant.
The gymnasts on Canada’s Olympic team were selected based on their performances at the 2024 Canadian Championships that were held in Gatineau, Quebec from June 6-9. The Paris Olympics start on July 26 and artistic gymnastics events are scheduled from July 27 to August 5.
