North Okanagan senior dog owners get help

In response to the rising number of pet surrenders in the region, driven by financial and other challenges, the Lumby Food Bank and Fletcher’s Keep Senior Dog Foundation have partnered to launch a new initiative called the “Paws, Nourish and Nurture Wellness Alliance Program.” This program is aimed at assisting senior dog owners in the North Okanagan who are facing difficulties.

The Paws Nourish and Nurture Wellness Alliance Program is backed by the Community Foundation of North Okanagan and focuses on addressing the unique challenges that come with caring for senior dogs. As dogs age, their care costs often increase, and the program seeks to ease that burden by providing access to age-appropriate dog food and funding for necessary veterinary services. The goal is to prevent unnecessary pet surrenders and abandonment by offering support to owners struggling to meet the needs of their elderly pets.

Residents of the North Okanagan who have senior dogs in need of assistance can enroll in the Paws, Nourish and Nurture (PNN) Program. The program offers vital help to those who are struggling to afford food, medical care, or dental care for their senior dogs. By providing subsidies for medical and dental care as well as nutritional support, PNN aims to alleviate the financial strain on low-income individuals or those grappling with the rising costs of caring for aging pets. Through its partnership with Fletcher’s Keep Senior Dog Foundation, the program provides crucial funding for elderly dogs’ health care, covering medications, dental treatments, and veterinary services. This initiative is made possible by the Community Foundation North Okanagan Smart & Caring Community Grant. Interested residents of North Okanagan can check eligibility here.

Fletcher’s Fund is currently available to individuals who qualify under the North Okanagan’s Paws, Nourish, and Nurture Program (PNN) and reside in Armstrong, Coldstream, Enderby, Lumby, Cherryville, Spallumcheen and Vernon. Those who don’t meet the qualifications can find assistance through the following programs:

Okanagan Humane Society Pet Assistance Program, Paws For Hope BC, Lumby Food Bank (a designated Pet Food Bank), BCSPCA Food Bank Outreach. For more details, visit Fletcher’s Keep’s website or call 250-564-2334.
