Lethbridge Recovery Community Helps Albertans Recover from Addiction

Taking the first step toward recovery can be incredibly daunting and challenging, especially for those battling addiction. The Lethbridge Recovery Community has made great progress over the past year. They have helped over one-hundred people start their recovery and keep improving their lives. The community helps residents overcome addiction by providing safe housing, treatment, and ongoing support ensuring that their needs are met throughout their recovery journey.

The 50-bed Lethbridge Recovery Community facility opened in Lethbridge last year and is operated by Fresh Start Recovery Centre. It aims to provide free, long-term addiction treatment for up to 200 individuals each year. In the last year, the centre has supported over 110 people, with expectations to help even more in the coming year.

For clients like Bryson North Peigan, the recovery facility has been a lifesaver and a game changer. After spending 7.5 months in the program, he reflected on the struggles he has had to endure with homelessness and incarceration. The facility has provided him with an invaluable opportunity to reclaim his life and pursue goals he once deemed unattainable. He has found a profound sense of belonging through the program and feels immense gratitude for this second chance.

Bruce Holstead, the executive director of Fresh Start Recovery, explained that their long-term approach differs from traditional short-term programs. Their model encourages organic growth, leading to promising possibilities for individuals seeking recovery. It creates an environment where clients can truly thrive and kick things like addiction to the curb once and for all.

Another client, Sean Perry, who has been in the centre for a little over a month, praised the extended stay, emphasizing that it allows the time necessary to process one’s life challenges and ensures a smooth transition to aftercare once they are out. The centre’s emphasis on long-term support, and numerous resources available upon leaving fosters a warm handover that promotes lasting recovery.

The location of the facility also plays a vital role in the healing process. North Peigan shared how being situated outside the city has helped him avoid old temptations and distractions, allowing him to concentrate on his healing.

For those contemplating their first step toward recovery, Perry and North Peigan offer encouraging words. They acknowledge the challenges of facing inner struggles but emphasize the acceptance and support available within the recovery community. Perry described the warm welcome he received, which was therapeutic for someone who had often felt alone.

North Peigan, initially fearful of taking that first step, expressed happiness about his decision to seek help. He encourages others to embrace their fears and take the leap, assuring them that everything will eventually fall into place.
