Grade 10 student from Alberta sets new provincial record in triple jump

Jonah Olfert Wiens from Cremona, Alberta has been competing in track and field since Grade 8 and also plays basketball, volleyball, and cross country. As a grade 10 student at Cremona School, he won the triple jump competition and set a new provincial record at the Alberta School Athletics Association (ASAA) championships in Edmonton.

Jonah set a record with a 13.53-meter triple jump and also won gold in the long jump at the provincial championships. He credits his success to hard training and studying jumpers online to improve his form. In the triple jump, competitors perform a hop, bound, and jump into a sand pit, with the total distance measured. Wiens was surprised to win gold in the long jump, where he was an underdog, but expected to do well in the triple jump. This was his first time competing at the provincial championships.

Wiens is 6’2” and weighs about 165 pounds. He credits his gym coach, Tyson Youngs, for his training and development. Competing in track and field since grade 8, Wiens also plays basketball and volleyball and runs cross country. He is a consistent honour roll student and plans to attend college. His brothers, Ben and twin Sam, are also active in athletics.
