Centre Wellington in Ontario named as Canada’s Most Generous City

CanadaHelps recently revealed a list of Canada’s most generous cities, naming Centre Wellington, Ontario as Canada’s most generous city among Canada’s top 200 most populated cities. The results are based on donations made using CanadaHelps. 6.27% of the 31,093 population have donated to a charity using CanadaHelps as of November 30th, 2024. For the second year, Centre Wellington retained its position as Canada’s most generous city based on donors per capita.

Centre Wellington was followed by Collingwood in Ontario, as about 5.6% of Collingwood residents donated money through CanadaHelps to various charities. Collingwood maintained its second rank for the second year in a row. The top two are followed by Fort Erie, Ontario, with 5.27% of its residents donating. North Vancouver, B.C. (4.62%), and Victoria, B.C. (4.58%), moved up to fourth and fifth place, respectively. Fredericton, N.B. (4.25%), and St. John’s, N.L. (4.23%), ranked sixth and seventh, while Whitehorse, Yukon (4.10%), Waterloo, Ontario (4.07%), and Brant, Ontario (3.94%), round out the list.

Major cities in Canada ranking among the country’s top 200 most generous cities included Halifax, Nova Scotia at 22nd place with 3.35% of residents donating. Ottawa, Ontario ranked 25th with 3.21% of residents donating while Vancouver, British Columbia stood at 38th place with 2.78% of its residents donating. Toronto, Ontario stood at 39th place, Calgary, Alberta in 49th place, Hamilton, Ontario in 56th place, Edmonton, Alberta in 57th place.

According to the list, Atlantic provinces rank among Canada’s most generous in 2024, with Nova Scotia retaining its position as the most generous province with 2.63% of residents donating. Ontario rose to second place with 2.35%, while Newfoundland and Labrador stayed in third at 2.32%. Prince Edward Island (2.29%)  ranked fourth, followed by Alberta (2.05%) at fifth place. British Columbia (1.99%) and New Brunswick (1.96%) took sixth and seventh places, respectively, while Manitoba (1.82%) and Saskatchewan (1.15%) maintained their spots in eighth and ninth.

Among Canada’s territories, Yukon is still Canada’s most generous territory with 3.26% of residents donating followed by Northwest Territories (2.90%) and Nunavut (0.32%). The complete list of the most generous cities in Canada is available here.
