BC’s Ed Murray receives the 2024 Wishbone Award

Ed Murray of Cranbrook, B.C., is one of eight proud recipients of the 2024 Wishbone Award, a national honour celebrating community heroes. For decades, Ed has been at the heart of an annual turkey dinner tradition for seniors in his community. Partnering with the local Rotary Club, volunteers, food sponsors, and a chef, he helps serve 450 meals each year at the Columbo Center. Tickets are sold for just $5, with all proceeds going to charity. The 2024 event will mark the 41st dinner, continuing a tradition started by the late George Georgopoulos of the Cranbrook Rotary Club. Ed has worked tirelessly to preserve this legacy, ensuring seniors enjoy a festive meal and connection every holiday season.

The Wishbone Awards recognize individuals and groups who bring holiday joy by providing festive meals to those in need. From organizing turkey drives to volunteering in community kitchens, this year’s recipients showcase the true spirit of giving. Each honouree will receive a $2,500 grant to support their holiday initiatives, along with a personal award acknowledging their efforts. These awards are part of The Wishbone Project, an initiative launched in 2020 by Canada’s turkey farmers and processors. To date, the project has raised over $260,000 to combat food insecurity and support community heroes across the country.

The 2024 Wishbone Awards celebrate eight remarkable Canadians whose work embodies the spirit of the holidays. In addition to Ed Murray, the recipients include Chris Dopp and Leslie Pocklington from Collingwood, ON; Mike Baatz from Montcalm, MB; Jason Flood and Thomas Van Der Krogt from Winnipeg, MB; Robert Belley from Saskatoon, SK; Carrie Bartsch from Grande Prairie, AB; The Turkey Club, Parker Street Food and Furniture Bank from Halifax, NS; and Deborah McMillen and Friends from Parker’s Cove, NS.

The Wishbone Project continues its mission to support communities across Canada with food and funding. By shining a light on these outstanding individuals, the awards aim to inspire others to join the fight against food insecurity and spread holiday cheer. Each recipient’s dedication ensures that families and individuals across the country have access to festive meals during the holiday season.
