Albertans unite to support Jasper wildfire victims

More groups across Alberta joined the Red Cross fundraising efforts to help the wildfire victims in Jasper, Alberta. Radio stations, bottle depots, and Tim Hortons locations in Alberta teamed up to raise money for the Jasper wildfire victims. Alberta bottle depots worked with radio stations to promote the Alberta Day of Caring, July 31st, where people could bring their recycling to a bottle depot and choose to donate their refunded deposit to support those affected by the wildfire.

Radio stations and bottle depots joined the Alberta Day of Caring for Jasper to help those affected by the devastating fire in Jasper. The money collected will go to the Canadian Red Cross, with matching funds from the provincial and federal governments. The Red Cross will use the donations to assist those impacted in Jasper and other affected areas in Alberta. This includes immediate and ongoing relief, financial assistance, support to evacuees and hosting communities, recovery, resilience efforts, and supporting community preparedness and risk reduction for future disasters in Alberta. People who wanted to donate could take their empty bottles to any bottle depot in Alberta as part of Alberta Day of Caring. In addition, Tim Hortons locations in Alberta sold a $2 fundraising doughnut from Aug. 12 to 18.

Ever since the wildfire started, local Tim Hortons restaurant owners have been donating food and drinks to first responders and evacuation centers in Jasper. All proceeds will go to Red Cross relief efforts for Jasper wildfire victims. According to Canadian Red Cross chief of emergencies Amy Avis, the needs of the people impacted by the wildfires will continue to emerge in the coming weeks and months.

The Alberta Day of Caring for Jasper event collected over $674,000 to support individuals and families impacted by wildfires. The Canadian Red Cross thanked everyone who contributed and highlighted their dedication to working with the community, Indigenous leadership, and government at all levels to help with the recovery efforts in Jasper.

Until now, the Canadian Red Cross has raised over $7.8 million for the 2024 Alberta Wildfires Appeal. Donations made by individual Canadians between July 25 and August 24, 2024, will be matched by the Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada.
