Four individuals from communities in Chilliwack and Kent, British Columbia, were awarded the King Charles III medal for their outstanding work helping others within and around their community over recent years. Bradley Gionet, Jason Lum, Sylvia Pranger, and Julie Unger were celebrated during a ceremony at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre last month. Each award recipient has made a significant impact in their communities, showcasing the power of community service and collaboration in helping each other.
The King Charles III medal is a commemorative medal created to mark the coronation of King Charles III, which took place on May 6, 2023. This medal is awarded to individuals who have made major contributions in and around their communities and have helped others.
Julie Unger, who is the executive director at the Chilliwack Society for Community Living, has dedicated her career to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities. Since 1984, she has fostered an inclusive environment, helping people with diverse abilities achieve employment and independent living throughout Chilliwack and beyond.
Mayor Sylvia Pranger was honoured for her tireless commitment to the Agassiz community. Her passion for improving local infrastructure and support systems has made a lasting difference, and she actively advocates for rural issues, ensuring that the voices of her community are heard and listened to.
Jason Lum, who is a Councillor, brings nearly two decades of experience in community development and governance. Three years ago, when the massive floods hit Fraser Valley, his leadership was pivotal in protecting residents and fellow neighbours, providing essential support to affected areas. His proactive approach exemplifies how local leaders can mobilize resources in times of crisis.
Bradley Gionet, a dedicated community advocate, has been instrumental in supporting Ukrainians fleeing the war. Over the past two and a half years, he has volunteered with the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel, facilitating housing and opportunities for displaced Ukrainians across The Fraser Valley, demonstrating compassion and commitment in a time of need to individuals who were displaced due to the conflict.
These four local heroes represent the spirit of community service and the impact that dedicated individuals can have on the lives of others. Their remarkable efforts inspire those around them and highlight the importance of giving back to one’s community.
